I’m Emily Boswell, Ph.D., (she/her/hers). I was born and raised in Michigan where I received my undergraduate degree in Arts & Humanities and Psychology in 2016 from Michigan State University. I moved to Indiana to continue my studies in graduate school where I earned my Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Social Psychology in 2018 from Ball State University. Prior to beginning my Ph.D. program, I worked as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate at a local Community Mental Health agency where I primarily worked with children, adolescents, and their families. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame Counseling Center in 2023. In addition to providing psychological services under the supervision of Dr. Taylor Locker, I am also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Purdue University.
My therapeutic style is relational and authentic. I view our relationship as the most important component for positive change and personal growth, and I strive to create a therapeutic alliance that feels safe, collaborative, warm, and empowering for all clients. My theoretical orientation draws from Relational Cultural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I practice through a lens of cultural humility that affirms, values, and adapts to a client’s intersecting identities and needs. I approach therapy, growth, and healing as a process with the ultimate goals of personal authenticity, creating meaning, and connecting with oneself and others. Throughout the therapeutic process, I collaborate with my clients to help them better understand themselves, their emotions, and their relationships with others. My training is grounded in the “generalist” practice of counseling psychology, and I also have specific training and experience in working with LGBTQ+ identity development and intersectionality, self-compassion, trauma, and relationship and family of origin concerns.
