Emily Boswell, Ph.D., HSPP

About me

I’m Emily Boswell, Ph.D., (she/her/hers), a licensed psychologist based in West Lafayette, Indiana. My therapeutic style is relational and authentic. I view our relationship as the most important component for positive change and personal growth, and I strive to create a therapeutic alliance that feels safe, collaborative, warm, and empowering for all clients.

Education and Training

I was born and raised in Michigan where I received my undergraduate degree in Arts & Humanities and Psychology from Michigan State University. I moved to Indiana to continue my studies in graduate school where I earned my Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Social Psychology in 2018 and my Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology in 2023 from Ball State University. I completed my practicum training at The Indiana Academy and the Jane Pauley Community Health Center through their school-based services. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the University of Notre Dame Counseling Center in 2023 where I was a co-founder of their first LGBTQ+ Therapy Group and assisted in developing clinical supervision protocols to provide effective supervision training to predoctoral interns, and to guide the supervision provided to masters-level interns.

My training is grounded in the generalist practice of Counseling Psychology, which offers a holistic focus to aid in improving personal and interpersonal functioning, overall well-being, and alleviating distress. I have training and expertise in working with a wide range of mental health concerns such as depression/mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma and stress disorders, and eating disorders.

I have specific training and special interest in working with LGBTQ+ identity development and intersectionality, self-compassion, trauma, and relationship and family of origin concerns. I am also listed as a provider on the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Provider Directory.

I have work experience in University Counseling Centers, University Training Clinics, school-based services, Community Mental Health Clinics, and Private Practice.

Former Positions

Prior to joining Locker Psychological Services full-time, I was a Clinical Assistant Professor at Purdue University, where I served as the Director of the Purdue Counseling and Guidance Center. I oversaw the clinical work of doctoral practicum students and provided individual and group supervision.

Prior to beginning my Ph.D. program, I worked as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate at the Suzanne Gresham Center where I primarily worked with children, adolescents, and their families.

Working with me

My theoretical orientation is primarily based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), but is also informed by a variety of other approaches including feminist-multicultural, humanistic, dialectical-behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral therapies. I practice through a lens of cultural humility that affirms, values, and adapts to a client’s intersecting identities and needs. I approach therapy, growth, and healing as a process with the ultimate goals of personal authenticity, creating meaning, and connecting with oneself and others. Throughout the therapeutic process, I collaborate with my clients to help them better understand themselves, their emotions, and their relationships with others.

Services Provided

I offer individual therapy for adults, group therapy, consultation, training, and clinical supervision to doctoral students and post-doctoral residents.

Supervision Style

My role as a supervisor is an important aspect of my identity as a Counseling Psychologist. I take a developmental and feminist-based approach, which involves tailoring supervision to the needs of the supervisee, creating an environment of safety, support, and trust, and seeking to decrease the inherent power differential between supervisor and supervisee. I provide space for both support and challenge. Additionally, I aim to know my supervisees holistically, meaning I care about how they are doing not just professionally, but also personally (given each supervisee’s level of comfort in sharing). I care deeply about each supervisee I work with and take a nonjudgmental stance when working together.
